Pass the Fear Affix Guide
Master all six weapon affix families and pair them with relics for stronger runs.
Affixes transform base weapons into build-specific tools at Pass the Fear Forge stations. Six affix families—Fragment, Growth, Final Shot, Disruption, Embarkation, and Shatter—define how your shots behave, what events they generate for relic procs, and whether you can survive elite bullet patterns. This guide explains each affix, when to craft it, how affixes stack with dual weapon slots, and where to verify numbers in our affix reference tool.
Affix Basics
An affix attaches to a weapon slot and consumes Forge materials plus sometimes rare drops from elites. Affix tier increases potency but also material cost. Not every affix belongs on every barrel: high-rate weapons amplify Fragment and multi-hit relics; slow heavy weapons favor Final Shot and Shatter breakpoints.
You can run different affixes on each of your two weapon slots. That split is how advanced players cover mob clear and boss break without swapping mid-fight. If you are still learning Forge access points, read weapon customization alongside this page.
Fragment
Fragment splits or duplicates projectiles, creating additional hit events per trigger pull. It is the default recommendation for players struggling with swarm rooms early in the twelve-hour mission.
Pair Fragment with relics that proc on hit count rather than raw damage. Elemental barrels that apply status on contact also scale well—more fragments mean more procs. Avoid Fragment on weapons with already wide spread unless you have Disruption to control elite movement; otherwise you lose precision on break points.
Growth
Growth scales a weapon’s effect over time—damage, status strength, or secondary explosions depending on tier. It rewards sustained firing on a single priority target and excels in boss arenas if you can dodge during ramp-up.
Combine Growth with duration-extending relics and defensive layers that prevent stack resets from knockback or phase transitions. Growth underperforms on routes where you must kill adds quickly between boss phases; carry a Fragment or Disruption secondary in your other slot. Community builds often tag Growth setups explicitly for boss rush strategies.
Final Shot
Final Shot empowers the last round or burst in a magazine pattern. Disciplined reload cadence is mandatory—check controls bindings for reload and dodge comfort before committing materials.
Synergize with magazine size reductions that arrive faster at the final shot, crit chance relics, and tarot modifiers that reward burst windows. Final Shot is weaker in perpetual mob rooms where you rarely reach the end of a pattern; swap to your secondary slot or save Final Shot for gate bosses described in how to beat bosses.
Disruption
Disruption adds stagger, slow, interrupt, or other control to projectiles. Bullet-hell difficulty often comes from uninterrupted enemy firing patterns; Disruption buys readable lanes.
It pairs with Shatter when elites have break bars—stagger first, shatter second. Co-op teams sometimes assign Disruption to one player while others stack Growth. See co-op roles for callout timing on stagger windows.
Embarkation
Embarkation links weapon effects to mobility actions—dashes, slides, or short teleports depending on character kit. It favors aggressive positioning and punishes stationary play.
High skill ceiling: you must dodge through patterns to maintain uptime. Reward is superior boss positioning and synergy with dash-count relics. New players should treat Embarkation as a second-run affix after learning baseline patterns in getting started.
Shatter
Shatter adds bonus damage or instant break when hitting shields, armor plates, or marked weak points. Mandatory for certain boss phases and armored elites that otherwise time-gate your DPS.
Without Shatter or equivalent break tools, Growth stacks expire before break bars fall. If your team lacks Shatter in co-op, reroute to a Forge before the next boss marker. Relic synergies lists break-bar proc chains that double Shatter effectiveness.
Stacking and Anti-Synergies
Two copies of the same affix on both weapons rarely outperform a complementary split. Fragment plus Disruption clears rooms while controlling elites; Growth plus Shatter handles bosses after adds are managed.
Tarot can ban affix rerolls or double material costs—read modifiers before investing tier-three upgrades. Chaos Battle Scar difficulty options may increase affix tier caps at the cost of enemy health; details live in the Chaos Battle Scar guide.
Practical Forge Priority
- Fix damage type with an elemental barrel if enemies resist your shots.
- Add the affix that solves your current failure mode (clear, control, or break).
- Upgrade tier on your primary affix before duplicating on slot two.
- Save surplus materials for a pre-boss Forge stop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many affix types exist in Pass the Fear?
Six core families ship at launch: Fragment, Growth, Final Shot, Disruption, Embarkation, and Shatter. Each has multiple Forge tiers with increasing potency.
Can I put the same affix on both weapons?
You can, but complementary affixes usually outperform duplicates. Split clear and boss tools unless a tarot modifier rewards doubling one type.
Which affix is best for bullet-hell swarms?
Fragment is the most consistent answer for mob density, especially with multi-hit relics. Add Disruption if elites keep firing through your fragments.
Does Growth reset when I swap weapons?
Growth stacks typically belong to the weapon that applied them. Swapping mid-fight can drop ramp—plan weapon swaps around boss phase transitions.
Where can I compare affix numbers side by side?
